Avoid the Friday the 13th bad luck by staying home to stream some new entertainment led by a Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes period-piece romantic drama, a goofy new Rebel Wilson comedy, a TV series adaptation of The Lincoln Lawyer, and more!

SERIES

The Essex Serpent

AppleTV+ – 13 May 2022

Based on Sarah Perry’s award-winning novel of the same name, this six-episode 19th-century-set historical drama follows widow Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes) who relocates to Essex to investigate claims of a mythical serpent. Along the way though, she finds herself in a peculiar relationship with the village vicar (Tom Hiddleston), who may or may not be able to help her when she becomes a suspect in a local tragedy. Expect lots of swooning, smoldering looks, and sweeping landscapes.

The Lincoln Lawyer

Netflix – 13 May 2022

Popular crime fiction author Michael Connelly’s novel The Lincoln Lawyer already got the feature film treatment with a movie in 2011 and now it’s being made into a TV series as well. There’s no Matthew McConaughey this time around, but Manuel Garcia-Rulfo stars as Mickey Haller, the Los Angeles-based defense attorney who works out of a chauffeur-driven Lincoln Town Car rather than an office. Yes, he’s unorthodox, but he gets results.

The Kids in the Hall S1

Amazon Prime Video – 13 May 2022

I’ll be honest, I don’t really know “The Kids in the Hall” other than having heard the name a few times over the years, however I’m sure that some you reading this may have been fans of the Canadian sketch comedy show that ran in the early/mid-1990s. Well, now all three of you can rejoice as The Kids in the Hall are back with a brand new eight-episode revival!

Lovestruck High S1

Amazon Prime Video – 18 May 2022

Netflix seems to release half a dozen reality dating shows every other week, so it’s only fair that one of the other streamers get in on the act. Enter Prime Video’s Lovestruck High which transplants the normal “beautiful people acting crazy for romance” schtick to the home of hypercharged hormones: High school!

MOVIES

Senior Year

Netflix – 13 May 2022

Senior Year sees Rebel Wilson starring as young woman who wakes up from a 20-year coma after a cheerleading accident prematurely ended her popular girl high school days. Now a 37-year-old who missed two decades of growing up, she wants to actually go back to finish high school. That premise seems tailor made for Wilson’s comedy stylings, so if you’re a fan, you’re probably in for a goofy treat.

A Perfect Pairing

Netflix – 19 May 2022

Look, I’m not even going to bother trying to sell this romcom. Just twenty seconds into this trailer and you’ll already know exactly the type of movie you’re in for – it ticks all the genre boxes. There’s surprisingly a huge market for these predictable movies, so here’s another one to enjoy if you’re a fan.

The Shadow

AppleTV+ – 13 May 2022

THIS IS NOT A DRILL! One of my favourite cult-classic pulp action hero films of all time is FINALLY available on a streaming service! Now if only the same can happen for The Phantom, then I’ll really be happy!
