One thing board gamers know is that their hobby isn’t cheap. Especially with South Africa’s delightful exchange rate. So any opportunity to pick up some bargains is a reason to get excited.

Durbanites will have that opportunity in February with The Unseen Shoppe‘s annual second-hand board game sale.

You can find out all the details – including the sale terms and conditions – on the Facebook event page, but here’s the gist of things.

The sale will run over 2 days, from 18 – 19 February (Saturday and Sunday) at the Westville shop. Doors open at 10am as usual, but you’re advised to get there early as the sale operates on a “first come, first served” basis. Last year, queues were across the parking lot by 8 o’ clock. At the same time, to ensure fairness, the number of games that each individual can buy, may be limited.

According to store owner Shelley Kirby, during the 2016 event, over 500 pre-loved board games were put on sale. By the end of the weekend, 90% of those games (typically priced at 20% off, and more) had found new homes. Meanwhile, 300 people passed through the doors on the first day, snatching up contemporary favourites (like the always in-demand Settlers of Catan) and rarer, out-of-print titles.

Of course, the flip-side of the sale is that it’s your chance to offload some of your old, neglected games, and other geeky wares – and hopefully make back some of your initial investment. You simply  you need to drop them off at the store before 14 February. At this point you will set your selling price, and decide if you would like an EFT or store credit should your goodies sell.

As one final note, there is a competition currently running on Facebook. Three people who share the event will be chosen at random to jump the queue on the 18th.
