Attendees of Comic Con Africa 2019 may remember the bizarre situation of seeing KFC as a convention sponsor, but not being able to actually buy any of their iconic fried chicken at the event when the inevitable craving struck. That had to do with strict in-house catering rules at Gallagher Estate, that year’s venue. This year, things are quite different.
Coming back from a three-year pandemic break this week, Comic Con Africa 2022 has a new home: the Johannesburg Expo Centre. That shift in location means that external vendors and food trucks are back on the menu. That includes sponsor KFC, which is bringing their Kentucky Town pop-up experience (already seen in Cape Town) to the con’s food court.
What does that mean? KFC will be making an exclusive pop culture-themed menu for the festival, renaming some of their exclusive creations and inventing some new items as well. The menu includes the One Ring Chicken Donut Burger, the OP Donut Zinger Burger, The Hero Combo served with new #WhatTheFanta beverage, the black bunned Doom Burger, and The Blaze Burger dunked in KFC’s spicy Ghost Pepper Sauce. On the sweet side, there’s the Yum Yum It Is salted caramel milkshake, which has a Star Wars theme.
Glitched has a breakdown of all the items on the CCA Kentucky Town menu, their prices, as well as the limited edition clothing and signature sauces you’ll be able to pick up as well.
KFC isn’t just bringing novelty food items and clothing to CCA. Fans can make customisable items too, like KFC’s Colonelise Yourself T-shirts, and use the KFC Cosplay Greenscreen Booth to place themselves on a comic cover. They could even win a real tattoo on the spot via KFC’s Tattoo Parlour. As for gamers, every day of the four-day convention, fans can compete in the Zinger Hot AF Lap Challenge Qualifiers for a chance at winning an Xbox Series X console. Be warned though: part of the contest involves devouring Zinger Wings.
Comic Con Africa is taking place over four days from 22-25 September 2022 (this week!) at the Johannesburg Expo Centre.
