Cosplay has always been a staple at any pop culture convention, and Comic Con Africa is no exception. From closet cosplays and amateur enthusiasts to professional competitors, the cosplayers that grace the halls of a convention are always welcome. And with that in mind, Comic Con Africa has announced a new sewing-themed competition in the build-up to their full return in September 2022.

Sponsored by Brother South Africa and hosted at STADIO School of Fashion, the Comic Con Africa Sew-A-Thon takes place on 11 June 2022. This one-of-a-kind, 8-hour Sew-A-Thon looks to test the skills and the handiwork of local sewists, fashion designers, and costume designers – from beginners to advanced.

The Comic Con Africa Sew-A-Thon promises an intense, fun, and nail-biting competition for entrants. The event will also be broadcast live on YouTube for all to join in and spectate the gripping time-based challenge, while we are checking in with contestants as their creations come to life.

Comic Con Africa Content Director, Rene Staack said that this fun experience will put the creative and technical know-how of beginner, intermediate, and advanced contestants to the test, all while standing a chance to win their share of a prize pool valued over R23 000,00.

“Cosplay is a cornerstone of Comic Con Africa, and behind every great cosplay is a great designer. We are hoping that this challenge highlights more craftmanship.” Staack added. “We encourage all to act fast with their registrations as space is limited.” The main challenge will remain a mystery, until two weeks prior to the Sew-A-Thon.

To add to the intensity, within the limited time frame, contestants will also be given a side challenge to create items that will be donated to Comic Con Africa’s selected charity. Judges Chenelle van Wyk, Patrick Brill, Terese Potgieter, Jinxie Cosplay, and Ludus Cosplay will be scoring contestants on criteria based on their storyboard, pattern, finishes, design, and overall execution with extra points given for the bonus side challenges.
