Just like the real world, I like to believe that the internet has its own equivalent of the great wonders of the digital world. While it’s debatable what those relatively ancient online landmarks are–and I’m more than ready to make a case for Leekspin–there’s no denying that Lofi Girl deserves a spot on that list. Load up your YouTube and you’re likely to see Lofi Girl studying away to the tune of some soothing beats, or at the very least, another channel influenced by her popping up in your feed.
But what if you could make your own Lofi Girl? What if you were given the tools to help you set up a perfect space for concentration and relaxation, customizing them to suit your particular needs? You’d get Spirit City: Lofi Sessions, a delightful little toolset from MoonCube Games which allows you to customize your lofi experience and build on it.
There’s a great variety of tools here, allowing you to choose your Lofi avatar, the space you want them to work in, and even a creature companion. There’s a slight Pokemon feel to this last component, as you’ll be able to coax in spirits from outside and befriend them if certain conditions are met, allowing them to join you for future sessions. Throw in a well-curated selection of Lofi tracks and you’ve got a pretty rad setup available for when you want some background noise or gentle visuals to help recalibrate your mind for a specific task.
I gave Spirit City a bash on the weekend, as I’m currently in the middle of a Gundam model kit build where I have to clean each part with a scalpel and sanding paper before I bust out my airbrushing kit. That’s a laborious part of model-building, as I have to work through literally hundreds of small plastic parts before I can take the next step, and typically, I like to have an episode of Columbo or a documentary playing in the background while I spend several hours doing this.
I’m not going to say that Spirit City made me better at performing delicate surgical work on my pieces, but I will say that it was a welcome alternative. Those slick beats, those inviting colors glowing from my monitor, and the overall feeling of relaxation did make the hours tick by pretty quickly on a crisp autumn day. It even offers a built-in to-do list and a Pomodoro timer, reminding you to take frequent breaks and stay on schedule. Heck, I’m running Spirit City right now as I hurl words at my screen, while my adorable avatar doodles out some art. It’s just nice to have something different playing in the background, compared to YouTube’s terribly repetitive mixes.
It just… it just makes me happy.
And that right there, is the charm of Spirit City. Like the spirits you’ll collect, it’s a charming companion, an assistant to help you through a task as it enhances your personal workspace. Whether you’re engaged in a hobby or you’re buckling down for the work-from-home grind, Spirit City: Lofi Sessions will help you get your work done in a chilled style. It’s the ultimate anti-procrastination game, a moddable Lofi Girl simulator that never pressures you to be productive but is more than ready to help you tick some tasks off your to-do list when you boot it up.
Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is out now on PC via Steam.
