While the Super Bowl is a big event in the United States for American Football fans, the rest of the world generally only knows it as the weekend where loads of new trailers for highly anticipated upcoming movies and TV series drop. It’s a busy time for the entertainment industry!

Highlights of this past weekend include another look at the Oscar Isaac led Moon Knight, a new trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (including an instantly-recognisable voice cameo with big implications for the MCU), a first look at the latest horror film from Jordan Peele, and the debut trailer for Amazon’s flashy, ultra-big-budget Lord of the Rings prequel series. Meanwhile, both Netflix and the Warner Bros. DC Extended Universe revealed combo previews for all the biggies on their slates in 2022.

Here are all the solo trailers that stood out this past weekend, bearing in mind some others have already been covered in our most recent Weekly Recap.

Moon Knight

Trailer #2 for this one. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting a dark and vengeful new hero in the form of Moon Knight.

Oscar Isaac plays Marc Spector, a mercenary with dissociative identity disorder, who becomes the conduit for the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Ethan Hawke is the cult leader trying to convince Marc to unleash his dark side. The six-episode series starts steaming on Disney+ from March 30.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Spider-Man (2002) and Evil Dead’s Sam Raimi steps into the director’s chair for the second solo outing for Benedict Cumberbatch’s superhero sorcerer Dr. Stephen Strange.

This movie follows the events of Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home, and has Strange contending with the mind-bending mysteries of the Multiverse. Also appearing are Elizabeth Olsen as a returning Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, and Xochitl Gomez in the on-screen debut of America Chavez, a teenager with the ability to travel between dimensions. Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness hits cinemas from May 6.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

Not a simple rehash of the events already depicted in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, this billion-dollar fantasy series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history.

The official synopsis: This epic drama set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. You can read Vanity Fair’s exclusive First Look coverage of the series here.

The Rings of Power starts streaming from September 2 on Amazon Video.

Nope

“What’s a bad miracle?” Academy-Award winning filmmaker Jordan Peele is back following Get Out and Us with another unnerving and cryptic horror, this one presumably about an alien invasion that starts in a remote town. Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer and The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun star.

Nope hits cinemas July 22.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

A sequel was always on the cards after the success of the 2020 video game adaptation. This time, anthropomorphic blue hedgehog Sonic is eager to prove that he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) returns with a new partner, Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba), in search of a mystical emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

The CGI-animation-meets-live-action Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is out April 8.

Jurassic World Dominion

The final entry in the Jurassic World trilogy. Four years after the destruction of Isla Nublar, dinosaurs now live—and hunt—alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history’s most fearsome creatures.

Returning Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are joined in their quest to protect the dinosaurs by original Jurassic Park stars, Laura Dern as Dr. Ellie Sattler, Sam Neill as Dr. Alan Grant and Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm. Jurassic World Dominion hits cinemas, including IMAX, on June 10.

The Adam Project

In The Adam Project, a time-traveling pilot (Ryan Reynolds) teams up with his younger self and his late father (Mark Ruffalo) to come to terms with his past while saving the future. Also with Jennifer Garner and Zoe Saldana.

The sci-fi project is directed by Shawn (Night at the Museum, Free Guy) Levy, who has been a Stranger Things producer in recent years. Screening on Netflix from March 11.

The Lost City

Despite the success of Romancing the Stone in the 80s, there have never been many comedy romance adventures. The Lost City seeks to rectify that, resurrecting the genre with the tale of romance novelist Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock) who is kidnapped by Daniel Radcliffe’s eccentric billionaire when he believes she knows the location of a fabled treasure. Meanwhile, romance cover model Alan (Channing Tatum) sets out to rescue Loretta and prove his heroic status. Brad Pitt also pops up.

The Lost City is in cinemas March 25.
