I don’t know if everybody’s just afraid of The Batman, but new movies are pretty scarce this coming week. If you’re looking for some TV series entertainment though, streaming services have you covered! We get animated and bloody with a prequel to The Boys, get claustrophobic underwater in submarine thriller Vigil, adapt a literally classic to the screen in Brave New World, and much more! I have to mention though that with the recent shakeup moving all new Star Trek series to Paramount+, there’s still no confirmation if we’re getting the second season of Star Trek: Picard – debuting on Paramount+ today – on Amazon Prime Video delayed by one day like in the UK or not. Ah well, plenty of other stuff to watch.

SERIES

The Boys Presents: Diabolical S1

Amazon Prime Video – 4 March 2022

While we eagerly wait for the third season of the brilliant comic book adaptation, The Boys fans are in for a demented treat with this prequel anthology series tackling eight different stories about the early days of the characters we’ve come to know and love/hate/fear/revile. And if you thought the original show was no-holds-barred, wait until you see what the creators can get away with now that it’s animated instead of live-action.

Pieces of Her S1

Netflix – 4 March 2022

Toni Collette stars as a mother to Bella Heathcote in this suspense drama about the dark family secrets the bubble to the surface after a violent incident rocks their small sleepy town. That blurb admittedly sounds a bit “seen it before”, but it’s Tony Collette. What more do you need to know to watch it?

Vigil S1

Showmax – 1 March 2022

“The deeper you go, the darker it gets”. That’s the clever tagline for this six-episode British miniseries that smooshes together murder mystery crime drama (a genre the British are firmly the kings of, in my opinion) and tense submarine thriller as two very different officers of the law have to solve a crime both on land and under the sea.

Brave New World S1

Showmax – 1 March 2022

Aldous Huxley’s seminal 1931 sci-fi novel Brave New World has not only been hugely influential with its tale of a futuristic World State where citizens are environmentally engineered into an intelligence-based social hierarchy, but has also been adapted to radio and screen several times. This production from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and starring Alden Ehrenreich is the latest, featuring a few updated tweaks to the classic tale.

Grand Crew S1

Showmax – 9 March 2022

No, isn’t some kind of behind-the-scenes spinoff to The Grand Tour. This ensemble dramedy sitcom could not be further removed from that motoring show, as it follows a group of black friends as they discuss and unpack all of life’s ups and downs while drinking at a wine bar.

Last One Standing

Netflix – 8 March 2022

If you thought the unscripted Murderville wasn’t zany enough for you, then check out this absurd Japanese reality show which casts comedians as characters in a serious drama show where they have to introduce unscripted witty banter. If their jokes don’t land though, they’re kicked off the show until there’s only one comedian left standing.

MOVIES

Lucy and Desi

Amazon Prime Video – 4 March 2022

It’s one comedy icon honouring another as Amy Poehler directs this documentary about groundbreaking TV comedy star Lucille Ball and her relationship with Desi Arnaz, her co-star in the historic I Love Lucy sitcom, and the indelible mark they left on Hollywood.

The Bombardment

Netflix – 9 March 2022

Based on true events, this Danish WWII drama follows the fates of several characters who get thrust into the horrors of war after a Copenhagen school for children is accidentally targeted during a bombing mission.
