There’s a… hell of a lot of fun to be had in the coming week’s streaming releases thanks to animated video game adaptation Devil May Cry, Kevin Bacon’s demon-hunting new series The Bondsman, the local streaming debut of Venom: The Last Dance, and more!
SERIES
Mid-Century Modern
28 March 2025 – Disney+
From the creators of Will & Grace and prolific TV exec Ryan Murphy, comes new sitcom Mid-Century Modern. The show stars Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, Nathan Lee Graham as three gay best friends who, after an unexpected death, decide to embrace their golden years together in sun-soaked Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother. Expect this one to just be comfy laughs.
Teacup S1
1 April 2025 – Showmax
Adapted from Rober McCammon’s bestselling novel Stinger, Teacup is a horror-drama series created by Ian McCulloch and produced by horror maestro James Wan. Starring Yvonne Strahovski, Scott Speedman, Chaske Spencer, and Kathy Baker, the series follows a group of neighbours who find themselves trapped on a farm in rural Georgia and must put aside their differences and unite in the face of a mysterious and deadly threat. Teacup debuted in the US on Peacock last October, and has unfortunately not been picked up for a second season, but there’s still good thrills and scares to be had here.
Devil May Cry S1
3 April 2025 – Netflix
Following his massive success with bringing Castlevania to the screen, producer Adi Shankar is now turning his attention to another beloved video game franchise in Devil May Cry. And seemingly also trying to singlehandedly resurrect the trend of AMVs. For those unfamiliar with Capcom’s long running franchise, Devil May Cry focuses on Dante, an orphaned demon-hunter-for-hire, who battles all sorts of sinister forces in the most stylish way possible with his signature dual pistols and sword. What makes DMC different to Castlevania is that Shankar is seemingly spying on Darryn’s liked songs on Spotify as the show boasts Limp Bizkit’s Rollin’ as its opening theme and also features other 2000s rock hits like Papa Roach’s classic Last Resort. Heck, fan favourite band Evanescence even announced this week that they’re doing a new single just for this show!
Pulse S1
3 April 2025 – Netflix
Nowadays you can’t swing a cat in a TV studio without hitting half a dozen medical drama procedurals. And yet, somehow, Netflix has never had one of its own. Until now. The streamer’s first-ever English-language medical procedural, Pulse comes from Emmy winner Carlton Cuse and writer Zoe Robyn, and follows Dr. Danny Simms (Willa Fitzgerald), a third-year resident at Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center. As the medical staff are frantically prepping for a hurricane heading towards the city, Danny finds herself unexpectedly put in charge when beloved Chief Resident Dr. Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell) – with whom Danny is secretly romantically involved – is suspended. But when the hospital goes into crisis mode as the onslaught of storm-related cases arrive, Xander is asked to stay on to assist, forcing the two to work together in life-or-death situations despite their personal drama.
The Bondsman S1
3 April 2025 – Prime Video
You may think you’re having a hell of a day, but it’s nothing compared to what bounty hunter Hub Halloran is going through in The Bondsman. Kevin Bacon stars in this new action horror comedy series, in which he is murdered on the job only to find himself resurrected by the Devil for a job offer: track down demons that have escaped from the prison of Hell and send them back where they came from. Armed with the knowledge of where he’s going to end up one day when he dies – again! – Hal looks to make amends with his estranged family in this is second chance at life, love, and country music!
MOVIES
Holland
28 March 2025 – Prime Video
Welcome to Holland, Michigan! The blissful little Dutch-inspired American town where every day is as perfect as the tulips the locals plant. Except, underneath the unending facade of meatloaf dinners and parade floats, there’s something seriously sinister going on here. And we’re not just talking about the fact that the local pastor considers all dancing except clog dancing to be from the devil! Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman and Golden Globe winners Gael García Bernal and Matthew McFayden lead this quirky new mystery thriller from Mimi Cave, the young filmmaker who had her breakout with 2022 indie horror hit Fresh. The reviews have not been as good as you may hope for the level of talent involved here, but Holland still looks quite interesting.
Venom: The Last Dance
31 March 2025 – Netflix/Showmax
I’m not going to sugarcoat it. I really did not like Venom: The Last Dance. As I mentioned in my 5/10 review, “against all odds, Venom: The Last Dance is the worst entry in Sony’s symbiotic comic book trilogy, thanks to a sleepwalking Tom Hardy and a slapdash, clearly patched together production from writer-director Kelly Marcel. A handful of bright moments can’t save this one from the abyss, even with the introduction of popular baddie Knull.” That being said, I also really disliked Venom: Let There Be Carnage and found the first film just OK, while there are plenty of fans (and box office receipts) that would disagree with me. So, maybe you can find more enjoyment in this final entry in the franchise when it lands on both Netflix and Showmax next week.
Boy Kills World
3 April 2025 – Showmax
For a film I did have fun with, despite its very blatant flaws, look no further than the wildly entertaining and violent Boy Kills World! Reportedly the most expensive film production ever in South Africa, this balls-to-the-wall martial arts action comedy is the brainchild of first-time filmmakers Moritz Mohr and Dawid Szatarski, but is produced by Sam Raimi and features a whole heap of Hollywood talent. Bill Skarsgård stars as Boy, a deaf and mute young man (with Archer’s H. Jon Benjamin providing his hilarious inner dialogue) looking to seek revenge on the Van der Koys (Famke Janssen, Sharlto Coplo, Michelle Dockery, Brett Gellman), the ruling family of a nameless dystopian future city who murdered his parents and left him disfigured. The cast also features Jessica Rothe, Andrew Koji, and Isaiah Mustapha in standout roles. And as I mentioned in my 7.5/10 review, “Boy Kills World is a manic Looney Tunes fever dream of over-the-top violence and humour that may not appeal to all, but makes for a super fun time if you’re willing to just go with it thanks to its superbly choreographed and filmed action and a very dedicated performance from lead Bill Skarsgård”.
