It’s movies, movies, and more movies this week, with the record-breaking Inside Out 2, George Clooney and Brad Pitt caper Wolfs, and the Michael Keaton directed/starred Knox Goes Away all making their streaming debut, among others.

SERIES

Midnight Family S1

26 September 2024 – Apple TV+

Making history as Apple’s first all-Spanish-language series, boasting an entirely Hispanic cast and crew, Midnight Family takes its inspiration from the award-winning documentary of the same name. The new drama series follows Marigaby Tamayo, who is following in her paramedic family’s footsteps by being a talented medical student by day. But at night, Marigaby and her siblings spend their nights saving lives throughout Mexico City aboard the family’s privately owned ambulance.

MOVIES

Knox Goes Away

25 September 2024 – Showmax

Showmax snuck this one in earlier this week without any mention on its blog or social media, as if we wouldn’t notice! The great Michael Keaton pulls double duty as both director and star of this stylish crime thriller. Boasting a supporting cast that also includes James Marsden, Marcia Gay Harden, Al Pacino, and more, this one sees Keaton as the eponymous contract killer who develops a rapidly evolving form of dementia. With his mind slipping away by the hour, Knox decides to make up for the life of violence he’s led and spend his last remaining days trying to redeem himself by saving the life of his estranged adult son.

Inside Out 2

25 September 2024 – Disney+

Inside Out 2 has not only been 2024’s biggest movie as it earned a whopping $1.5 billion globally, but it’s now officially the highest-grossing animated film OF ALL TIME and the eighth highest-grossing film altogether. All of which is to say that that if you’re reading this, chances are you watched Pixar’s latest bit of animated magic in cinemas earlier this year at least once. If, however, you’re one of the small handful of people (like me!) who somehow didn’t check out this sequel, then you’ll be happy to know that the movie is now available on Disney+ for streaming. Inside Out 2 continues the story of Riley and her emotions (all voiced and personified by a who’s who list of Hollywood elite), as she now enters high school as a newly minted teed… which prompts the addition of a whole new voice in her head: Anxiety!

Wolfs

27 September 2024 – AppleTV+

No, this is not deja vu. We accidentally included Wolfs in last week’s Stream Scene as we got the US theatrical release date and local Apple TV+ release dates swapped around. Oops! Sorry if that created any confusion. Here’s our original write-up in case you missed it.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt were fantastic together in the Oceans movies, and now the fan-favourite actors are finally reuniting on screen for Wolfs. From filmmaker Jon Watts (Marvel’s Spider-Man trilogy), this action-comedy sees Clooney as a professional fixer hired to cover up a high-profile crime. When miscommunication sees a second fixer (Pitt) showing up for the same job though, just as it all goes sideways, it forces the two “lone wolves” to work together if they hope to survive a night that quickly spirals out of their control.

Rez Ball

27 September 2024 – Netflix

Produced by NBA legend LeBron James and Sterlin Harjo, co-creator of the incredible award-winning Reservation Dogs, comes the inspiring sports drama Rez Ball. The Chuska Warriors are a high school basketball team in New Mexico with a rich Native American heritage. But after tragically losing their star player, the rest of the team needs to come together more than ever before – not just to help each other overcome their grief, but also realize their collective dream of winning a state championship.

The Truth vs. Alex Jones

2 October 2024 – Showmax

In December 2022, Alex Jones filed for personal bankruptcy. And it could not have happened to a better person. For years, the far-right conspiracy theorist creator of InfoWars made his name off the spreading of blatant lies for profit, not caring who he misled or harmed. Arguably the most egregious of these disinformation campaigns was his claim that the tragic 2012 mass shooting incident at Sandy Hook elementary school, which left 20 young children and six adult staff members dead, was all a staged event with paid actors, orchestrated by the US government. As a result of his repeated spreading of disproven conspiracy theories, he was sued by multiple family members of the victims, eventually leading to two different juries awarding $1.487 billion in damages from Jones to the plaintiffs. In the critically acclaimed feature-length documentary The Truth vs. Alex Jones, Emmy-winning filmmaker Dan Reed explores this incredible case over the course of four years with unprecedented access to all involved.

House of Spoils

3 October 2024 – Prime Video

If you’re missing that special brand of culinary anxiety while The Bear is on a seasonal break, allow me to bring House of Spoils to your attention. Coming from fan-favourite horror production studio Blumhouse, this supernatural thriller co-written and directed by the duo of Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy looks to turn kitchen nightmares into a literal description. Oscar-winning West Side Story breakout Ariana DeBose stars as an ambitious chef who opens her first restaurant on a remote estate. At first, she faces the usual problems of a chaotic kitchen, self-doubts, and cash flow… but then things take a macabre tone when something unexplained begins to sabotage her every culinary success with increasing intensity.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter

3 October 2024 – Showmax

October is Halloween month and Showmax is kicking things off nice and early with a great little creature feature that even the legendary Stephen King called “a throat-ripping good time.”. In Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, the Demeter is the ill-fated ship upon which the titular vampire lord travels in his coffin – unbeknownst to the crew – from Transylvania to London. This journey takes up just a single chapter in Stoker’s work, recalling just the captain’s log, but director André Øvredal (of Trollhunter and The Autopsy of Jane Doe fame) expands on the original narrative for a feature length horror movie. Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, and David Dastmalchian star.
