Welcome to Stream Scene, where we highlight any noteworthy new movies and series hitting online streaming services.
While the other streaming services are relatively quiet, Netflix subscribers have a LOT to pick from in the next week (plus some others that dropped in the last few days). For movies there’s action flick SAS: Rise of the Black Swan, animated fantasy prequel The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, and teen rom-com remake He’s All That. On the series front, the Big Red N offers twisty viral thriller limited-series Clickbait, mind-bending Polish psychological drama series Open Your Eyes, and Norwegian supernatural horror/black comedy series Post Mortem: No One Dies in Skarnes.
MOVIES
SAS: Rise of the Black Swan
Netflix SA – 27 August 2021
Based on popular author Andy McNabb’s novel Red Notice (which is its name in certain regions where it got a cinema release), Rise of the Black Swan stars Sam Heughan, Ruby Rose, and Andy Serkis, all caught up in a terrorist plot on a train. Don’t expect anything too special here except some skop, skiet, en donner action.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf
Netflix SA – 23 August 2021
If you’re always expecting new Netflix releases on Fridays, you may have missed that this hotly-anticipated animated film actually debuted this past Monday already. A prequel to the hit live-action The Witcher show, this is the origin story of Vesemir, Geralt of Rivia’s mentor.
He’s All That
Netflix SA – 27 August 2021
On the complete opposite end of the movie spectrum, He’s All That is the gender-swapped remake of beloved late-90s teen rom-com She’s All That. This time its Addison Rae’s popular high school girl who accepts the challenge to turn Tanner Buchanan’s loser guy into prom king. No glasses and ponytails are involved.
SERIES
Clickbait
Netflix SA – 25 August 2021
If you think that social media is just an horror-scape of dangerously fake people, then this plot-twist-heavy limited series is for you. Adrian Grenier stars as a seemingly-loving family man whose deadly secrets – or are they lies? – get spilled online for all to see, leading his wife and son down a dark spiral.
Open Your Eyes
Netflix SA – 27 August 2021
Keeping things psychological but heading over to Europe, Open Your Eyes is an intriguing Polish series about a woman suffering from memory loss whose treatment at a special hospital for amnesiacs may be more sinister than recuperative.
Post Mortem: No One Dies in Skarnes
Netflix SA – 25 August 2021
If you prefer your scares with a dash of absurdism, then this Norwegian horror/comedy series about a lady who somehow returns from the dead with some unexpected changes – including a craving for blood – may offer you all the thrills and chuckles you need.
