The last seven days were pretty massive in terms of streaming releases, just jam-packed with hotly anticipated movies and series. While this coming week isn’t as high-profile or as stacked, there are still a few great picks like the third and final season of Lost in Space, Oscar-contender drama The Power of the Dog, and more.
SERIES
Hanna S3
Amazon Prime Video – 24 November 2021
Full confession: Season 3 of Hanna actually premiered this past Tuesday, but somehow I just missed it. Hell, I didn’t even know we were getting the third and final season of the TV series adaptation of the 2011 feature film of the name this year! Blame the pandemic for my oversight, but whatever happened, I’m just glad we’ve got Esme Creed-Miles’ genetically engineered teenage killer back on our screens to wrap up her war on the UTRAX program that created her.
Elves S1
Netflix – 28 November 2021
Christmas is just a few short weeks away, so what better way to get into the festive season spirit than with this Danish series about the titular diminutive creatures… who are knife-wielding monsters trying to turn a family’s island vacation into a blood-soaked nightmare! Wait what?!
Lost in Space S3
Netflix – 1 December 2021
It’s been nearly two years since the second season of the sci-fi adventure series remake debuted on Netflix, so I can understand if you can’t remember what was happening. Here’s what you need to know: The space family Robinson are back… and they’re still lost! Ok so there’s a whole lot more than that going on in the final season of the popular show, including robot races hellbent on finding Will, family drama, a whole bunch of action, and the return of a villain!
MOVIES
Burning
Amazon Prime Video – 26 December 2021
The Australian bushfires of late 2019/early 2020 was one of the most devastating natural disasters the world had seen. More than that, it was a vicious wake-up call about climate change as Australia became the precursor for a possible global meteorological catastrophe of staggering proportions. And in this award-winning documentary, Oscar-winning filmmaker Eva Orner takes an unflinching look at how Australia’s “Black Summer” came to be and why the rest of the world needs to pay attention desperately.
The Power of the Dog
Netflix – 1 December 2021
Directed by Oscar winner Jane Campion (The Piano) and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee, this star-studded western drama sees Cumberbatch reportedly turn in a career-best performance as a domineering rancher who focuses his sneering scorn on his brother’s new wife and her teenage son. Expect to see this one a lot in the 2022 awards season.
The Whole Truth
Netflix – 1 December 2021
If you’re only ever watching English-language Hollywood productions, you’re really missing out. Netflix’s gigantic South Korean library is pretty well-known, but it also features plenty of other Asian offerings. For example, The Whole Truth, a very creepy looking Thai horror about a brother and sister who a mysterious hole in the wall in their grandparents’ house, triggering all sorts of scary business.
