Welcome to Stream Scene, where we highlight any noteworthy new movies and series hitting online streaming services.
Only two notable new movie debuts this weekend: The Jason Momoa-led action flick Sweet Girl hits Netflix, while trippy sci-fi noir Reminiscence starring Hugh Jackman debuts on HBO Max. Although not new, and also only debuting on Monday, a recommended movie alternative is Run on Showmax. Meanwhile, on the series side, comedy/drama The Chair with Sandra Oh also premieres on Netflix.
Sweet Girl
Netflix SA – 20 August 2021
Aquaman and Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa does his action hero thing in a film that tries to offer as many heavy issues (terminal cancer, loss of a spouse, Big Pharma) as it does heavy punches. It may also get a little… weird, according to reviews.
Reminiscence
HBO Max US – 20 August 2021
Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy makes her feature film debut writing/directing this star-studded sci-fi thriller which sees Hugh Jackman as a “private investigator of the mind”, who invents a way to relive other people’s pasts to search for a missing love, played by Rebecca Ferguson
Run
Showmax SA – 23 August 2021
Much like his criminally underseen 2018 masterpiece debut, Searching, writer/director Aneesh Chaganty’s follow-up thriller, Run, only got a limited late-2020 release in cinemas and Hulu. If you missed out on this critically-acclaimed nailbiter then, you can finally fix that now.
The Chair
Netflix SA – 20 August 2021
Perennial TV series standout Sandra Oh headlines this dramedy following the first woman Chair of a department at a prestigious university in the wake of a scandal, who has to navigate the challenges of that role as well as her topsy-turvy personal life.
