SERIES

Mythic Quest S3

Apple TV+ – 11 November 2022

Mythic Quest is back, baby! Despite season two looking like it could wrap things up, one of the best comedy series out there is back with some adventures in game development. Following the events from last season, Ian and Poppy have broken off to form their own new company with the egotistical Ian now having to work on Poppy’s game for once, while over at Mythic Quest, David has done a shockingly good job as the new boss, including a film adaptation starring Joe Manganiello. But as the nefarious Brad returns, and Ian and Poppy start butting heads, things are about to get hilariously unhinged.

Circuit Breakers S1

Apple TV+ – 11 November 2022

Ever wondered what Black Mirror would look like if it was made for kids? Well, wonder no more! Circuit Breakers is a new sci-fi anthology series that tells seven unique stories about what happens when children attempt to use future technology to seemingly better their lives.

The English S1

Amazon Prime Video – 11 November 2022

I have to admit, this one came out of nowhere for me and it looks superb. Billed as a “an epic chase western”, The English stars Emily Blunt and Chaske Spencer as the unlikeliest of duos – an aristocratic Englishwoman and a Pawnee ex-cavalry scout – caught up in a tale of bloodshed, racial atrocities, and the quest for a better life on the frontier. Underpinning their seemingly random collaboration and blook-soaked trek across 1890 Middle America is a deep mystery that ties them together in surprising ways.

Tell Me Lies S1

Disney+ – 16 November 2022

Ah yes. It’s the classic tale of girl meets boy, girl falls in love with boy, boy declares undying love for girl, girl discovers boy has another girl and a whole lot of dirty secrets but girl’s love for boy and her self-destructive tendencies means she can’t let go of boy and their messed-up relationship over the course of years spirals out of control affecting everybody around girl and boy, sometimes to tragic ends. Y’know, that old chestnut.

Limitless with Chris Hemsworth S1

Disney+ – 16 November 2022

For many, Chris Hemsworth is already a superpowered god among men, but that’s only on screen. In this new National Geographic reality series, the Marvel star faces some very real challenges set by various experts in their respective fields, as they attempt to unlock the full potential of the human body in a quest to live longer. That’s if these challenges don’t kill him first.

1899 S1

Netflix – 17 November 2022

https://youtu.be/p7OUQ9U2qIw

Across its three meticulously plotted seasons, German sci-fi drama Dark was heralded as one of the best time travel stories of the modern age, layering dense mystery storytelling atop intense character drama. And now Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, the creators of Dark, is back with another spellbinding new series called 1899. There are no timey-whimey shenanigans here though… well, at least that we know of, as the story follows a group of 19th century multinational immigrants on an oceanic crossing who get wrapped up in a disturbing puzzle when they encounter a mysterious second ship adrift on the open sea. If Dark’s insanely connected plotting was any indication, you’re going to have to pay careful attention here.

MOVIES

Fire of Love

Disney+ – 11 November 2022

Many couples claim to have an explosive and fiery love story, but for Katia and Maurice Krafft, this was a literal reality. Intrepid French scientists obsessed with volcanoes, the pair would spend years documenting and analyzing volcanic activity all around the world, eventually giving their lives in pursuit of their passion. What they left behind, in the form of a small mountain video footage and photos, comes together in this feature documentary to tell an incredible story of the warmest love.

Orphan: First Kill

Google Play Movies/Apple TV – 11 November 2022

I have to admit that I didn’t see horror movie Orphan when it released back in 2009, but I was very interested in its prequel Orphan: First Kill. My interest was purely technical though. In the first film, then twelve-year old Isabelle Fuhrman played Esther, a nine-year old girl with a deadly secret who gets adopted by a couple whose own child had passed away, only for seriously twisted events to start happening. First Kill delves into the prior years, showing how Esther became the way she is… and a now 25-year-old Isabelle Fuhrman is reprising the role! What makes this casting even more interesting is that no CGI was used to de-age Fuhrman but instead everything was done using makeup and practical effects. When First Kill got released in cinemas earlier this year, it got mixed reviews with some loving it and others not. What both sides can agree on is that filmmaking used to achieve Fuhrman’s transformation is incredible, and probably worth the price of a rental now that it’s out on Google Play Movies and Apple TV.

The Wonder

Netflix – 15 November 2022

With Midsommar and Little Woman in her filmography, Florence Pugh is no stranger to either unnerving psychological thrillers or period piece dramas. And now both of those genres combine in The Wonder, an adaptation of the novel from Emma Donoghue (writer of The Room). This one sees Pugh’s character tasked with seemingly keeping watch over the impossible: A young girl who claims to have not eaten for four months with no ill effects. But is the girl actually being sustained by miraculous “mana from heaven”, as she claims, or is something more nefarious going on?
