It’s fast action and fast cars as this week’s streaming releases are highlighted by Ryan Reynolds’ great-looking sci-fi actioner The Adam Project and the highly-anticipated fourth season of Formula 1 doccie series Drive To Survive! Those aren’t the only two high-profile titles though, as we also get the Samuel L. Jackson drama series The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, Grant Gustin in charming dog movie Rescued by Ruby, and more.
MOVIES
The Adam Project
Netflix – 11 March 2021
Star/producer Ryan Reynolds reteams with director Shawn Levy (Free Guy) for this sci-fi action-comedy that the actor has billed as a personal passion-project inspired by his real-world relationship with his father. A relationship that probably doesn’t involve time-travel and him teaming up with his younger self, but these are the liberties you take with movies. The Adam Project (which was intriguingly co-written by Banshee and Warrior’s Jonathan Tropper) looks like super-polished and a ton of fun, with early buzz promising more heart than you may expect.
The Unholy
Netflix – 12 March 2021
If you want your movie entertainment a lot less “all-ages”, then The Unholy is there to scare its way onto your screen. Released into cinemas in the midst of the pandemic last year, this horror flick stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a disgraced reporter whose discovery of a series of miracles in a tiny town revives his career… except these strange events may not be as miraculous as everybody may be hoping.
Rescued by Ruby
Netflix – 17 March 2021
Grant Gustin stars in this true story movie that you’ve probably seen several times before already but will watch again now. The Flash actor plays a state trooper who’s been unsuccessful in realizing his dream of joining a K9 unit he befriends a shelter dog named Ruby.
SERIES
Formula 1: Drive to Survive S4
Netflix – 11 March 2022
There’s been a massive resurgence in the popularity of Formula 1 racing over the last few years, and it’s hard to deny that Netflix’s brilliant documentary series may have played a big role in getting F1 noobs hooked on the sport. I know this from personal experience as my wife went from “This looks so boring! They’re just driving around and around!” to absolutely obsessessed with all the minuteia and drama both on and off the track after just one season. And seeing as how 2021’s on-track drama was unlike anything we’ve seen in decades, this latest season digging into what happened behind-the-scenes makes for must-see TV.
The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey S1
AppleTV+ – 11 March 2022
Written by acclaimed American novelist Walter Mosley, Samuel L. Jackson takes on the titular lead role in this drama series about a 93-year old man battling both dementia and loneliness, who gets given a revolutionary once-off treatment allowing him to temporarily remember everything in his life. Using this gift, he tries to solve a decades-old family mystery before literally losing his mind again.
Central Park S2
AppleTV+ – 11 March 2022
I must admit, I’ve barely seen any buzz for AppleTV+’s animated musical series, and thus never checked it out before. But that was before watching this season two trailer and discovering that the show’s crazy star-studded cast also includes Stanley Tucci voicing a villainous old lady as evil as she is tiny. Definitely adding it to the list now.
Upload S2
Amazon Prime Video – 11 March 2022
Unlike Central Park, I have seen great buzz for Upload though… but still haven’t checked it out either. Bad Kervyn. Created by Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks & Rec), this sci-fi comedy-drama is set in a world where the consciousness of recently deceased people get uploaded to a virtual reality afterlife of their choosing. Which isn’t always a good thing as Robbie Amell’s computer programmer found out when even his premature death wasn’t enough to get him out of his relationship with his domineering girlfriend. That was season one though. Lots more hijinks to come in this new season, I’m sure.
Once Upon a Time… Happily Never After S1
Netflix – 11 March 2022
Look, I could tell you that this new Spanish musical fantasy-comedy series is about a couple in medieval times who get cursed to be apart by an evil queen, only to be reborn in modern times with a chance to break the spell… but that sounds way too cute and Disney-like for what actually happens in this kinda bonkers-looking new series. Just check out the trailer to see what I mean.
Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives. S1
Netflix – 16 March 2022
I don’t think I can do any better than the official blurb for this new four-part documentary series detailing one crazy case: “After marrying a mysterious man who claimed he could make her dog immortal, a celebrated vegan restaurateur finds her life veering off the rails.”
