We’re a few days already into September but that doesn’t matter too much in terms of Disney+’s offerings, as the big name releases are still waiting in the wings. The reason for this? 8 September, this coming Thursday, is Disney+ Day and that means the streamer is doubling down on premieres and other exciting content.
Below are the new series and movies we’re most excited to watch on Disney+ Day, and throughout September.
Thor: Love and Thunder (Film)
Missed it on the big screen? As of 8 September, you can watch the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie entry Thor: Love and Thunder as a Disney+ Day premiere. Filmmaker Taika Waititi is behind the camera again (and now has additional writing duties) for the fourth solo movie centred on Chris Hemsworth’s Asgardian hero. This time, Thor’s quest for purpose is interrupted by the return of his ex Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who now has Thor powers of her own; as well as the appearance of unstable villain Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale).
Is Thor: Love and Thunder worth your time? Tracy thinks so in her spoiler-free review, but don’t expect the heights of Thor Ragnarok.
Pinocchio (Film)
Also part of the Disney+ Day festivities is the release of Disney’s latest live-action adaptation of their animated classics. This time it’s the turn of Pinocchio, which combines live-action and CGI-animation to bring to life the tale of a wooden puppet who embarks on wild adventures in his bid to become a real boy.
Robert Zemeckis is in the director’s chair, and Pinocchio sees the legendary filmmakers reunite with frequent collaborator Tom Hanks as Geppetto, the wood carver who creates Pinocchio, and whose wishes help bring him to life. Also in the cast are Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket, Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy, Keegan-Michael Key as Honest John, and Luke Evans as The Coachman.
Mike (Series)
Also debuting on 8 September in South Africa is Hulu miniseries Mike, an unauthorised look at the life of controversial heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson. It’s created and partially written by I, Tonya’s screenwriter and producer Steven Rogers, although Mike looks more drama than dark comedy.
Bird Box and The Predator star Trevante Rhodes plays Tyson, while Russell Hornsby is Don King, Harvey Keitel is boxing coach and manager Cus D’Amato, and Laura Harrier is Robin Givens. Mike consists of eight episodes.
Andor (Series)
Huh? Didn’t we have Andor in last month’s highlights article? Yes, we did. At the last minute, Disney+ bumped the A Star Wars Story: Rogue One prequel out a month to 21 September. The good news is that the latest Star Wars series is premiering with three episodes out of its 12-episode Season 1 set.
A second 12-episode season is already in development to conclude the story of Andor, which depicts the rise of the Rebel Alliance to oppose the cruel Galactic Empire in the gap between movies Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. These efforts see a diverse group of characters coming together, including Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), a thief who will become an inspiring revolutionary.
Hocus Pocus 2 (Film)
Capping off the month on 30 September, and just in time for Halloween season, is Hocus Pocus 2. This sequel to 1993’s cultishly popular horror comedy sees Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy return as 17th Century witches the Sanderson sisters to put a magic spell over modern-day Salem.
Set twenty-nine years after the events of the original film, the black flame candle is once again lit. As a result, three high-school students must work together to stop the Sanderson sisters before dawn on All Hallow’s Eve. For fans there’s also a Hocus Pocus 25th Anniversary Halloween Bash retrospective, looking back at the first movie’s making and its surprising cultural influence.
