We’re keeping this week’s pop culture news recap short and sweet. So you won’t find the new Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer, first images from Jurassic World Rebirth, or the 85 Years of Marvel clip (now officially unveiled) that includes glimpses at Thunderbolts, Daredevil: Born Again, and Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World. But, hey, you can leap to any of these clips right now if you like, using the links above.

Now it’s time for what did stand out for us.

Film

We’re willing to bet that you have no idea where the trailer for upcoming A24 comedy Y2K is going. In fact, we’re not going to say anything. Just know it starts when two loser friends crash a high school party on New Year’s Eve 1999. The film stars Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, and Alicia Silverstone, and comes from Saturday Night Live alumnus Kyle Mooney.

Y2K hits cinemas from 6 December.

Prepare for all the feels with upcoming documentary feature Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. This film, from Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, delves into the story of Superman actor Christopher Reeve, who became as well-known for real-life determination as on-screen heroism when he was left paralyzed by a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995. The documentary includes never-before-seen personal archive material, extended interviews with Reeve’s three children, and filmed accounts from actors who were Reeve’s colleagues and friends.

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story comes to select cinemas on 21 September and 25 September (what would have been Reeve’s 72nd birthday). Here’s hoping it comes to Warner Bros. streaming services around the world after that.

As a semi-related piece of on-screen Superman news, here’s your first look, courtesy of new DCU head and Superman (2025) director James Gunn, at Skyler Gisondo, who is delivering a very traditional take on Daily Planet junior reporter and photographer Jimmy Olsen.

Two more movie news tidbits:

  • Bridget Jones is returning to the big screen next year on Valentine’s Day (14 February). Based on the book of the same name, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy sees Renee Zellweger’s now fiftysomething character dealing with motherhood and the modern dating scene after the death of her husband. Hugh Grant returns as Daniel Cleaver, along with Emma Thompson as Doctor Rawlings, and the rest of Bridget’s friends and family circle. The last Bridget Jones film was 2016’s Bridget Jones’s Baby.
  • Has South African cinema chain Nu Metro accidentally revealed the release date for Hellboy: The Crooked Man? Announced as releasing in the American Fall, the reboot is listed as coming to South African screens on 27 September.

Gaming

Nintendo dropped another cheeky little Indie World & Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase this week, although we can’t say it really excited us like some other gaming news from the same period.

Case in point, the announcement that Alan Wake and Control makers Remedy have chosen Annapurna as a co-production and co-financing partner for the upcoming game Control 2 (which will be published by Remedy themselves). Annapurna will also help develop and produce projects relating to the Remedy-verse for film, television and other audiovisual formats.

For the record, Annapurna is the independent multi-platform media company and content studio that includes Annapurna Interactive, the indie game publisher, as one of its divisions.

Speaking of indie games, gamescom saw the announcement of a new wholesome co-op (or single player) adventure from that comes from the minds behind Unravel. Hela is made by Swedish studio Windup and publisher Knights Peak, and sees you playing as the mouse familiar of a witch. Gifted with a magical mini backpack, you must explore an open world landscape inspired by Scandinavian Folklore. This colourful, kindness-centred world is filled with puzzles to solve, potions to brew, and quests to complete, all to aid your ailing mistress.

There’s no release date yet for Hela, but it’s confirmed as coming to PC and unstated consoles. Wishlist on Steam here.

Still talking family-friendly games, the LAIKA-esque dark fantasy adventure Lost in Random is getting a sequel. Veering more into rogue-lite territory, and substituting the original game’s card mechanic for a new Relic enhancement system, Lost in Random: The Eternal Die also sees you playing as a different protagonist.

Aleksandra, Queen of Random, has lost everything. Deprived of her powers and trapped in a dark, nightmare realm, she must rely on her skills and trusty die-companion Fortune. Together, they gamble with fate on an epic adventure of revenge, redemption, and revelations in the whimsical realms of Random.

Out at some point in 2025, Lost in Random: The Eternal Die is coming to PC and all new-gen consoles, including Nintendo Switch. Interestingly, EA isn’t the publisher of this series installment. It’s all Thunderful.
