If you’re thinking of cancelling your Netflix subscription, maybe you want to hold off on pulling that trigger. That’s evidently the point of the annual Netflix Geeked showcase, which sets out to the spotlight the biggest genre fare coming to the streamer in the coming months.
Day One of the five-day Geeked Week was focused on series, with a 2 hour 30 minute live stream loaded with announcements and first looks.
As just a taste, filming has wrapped on Season 2 of post-apocalyptic fairy tale Sweet Tooth, and beloved fantasy series Shadow and Bone (plus we got a brief look at new character additions); while Season 2 of Korean zombie favourite All of Us Are Dead got a thumbs up.
Then there was a set tour of live-action anime adaptation One Piece, currently filming at the Cape Town film studio in South Africa. Oh, and an extremely short teaser for Tim Burton’s live-action Wednesday Addams series (coming in the North American autumn), which gives star Jenna Ortega serious Aubrey Plaza in Parks & Rec vibes.
You can read about everything announced during Day 1 here. Below are the standouts that got us most excited.
The Sandman
Following a long interview panel with the series cast, and comic creator Neil Gaiman, Geeked Week dropped a new trailer for The Sandman. This preview provides a better look at the storyline of this ten-episode dark fable, based on the first two volumes of the massively influential Vertigo comic series (which originally ran from 1989 to 1996). You really don’t get more epic and ambitious than The Sandman!
The plot synopsis: When Dream of the Endless (Tom Sturridge) is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. Following his escape, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to restore order, and mend the mistakes heβs made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends, foes and family. The Sandman starts streaming on 5 August.
Warrior Nun Season 2
It’s silly, it’s pretty trashy but as the closest thing to Buffy the Vampire Slayer today, we love Warrior Nun. Evidently we’re not the only ones because the show was swiftly renewed after its first season back in 2019. Loosely based on the comic of the same name, Warrior Nun sees smart-mouth Ava (Alba Baptista) accidentally gain supernatural powers via a relic known as the Halo, and join the Order of the Cruciform Sword. The Order is a top secret military organization of young women who have dedicated their lives to fighting demonic threats on behalf of the Catholic Church.
Following the treachery-loaded cliffhanger of Season 1, the threats are intensifying in Season 2, and unlikely hero Ava must stop running from her destiny, and learn to harness her powers. Warrior Nun returns later this year, during the Northern Hemisphere winter.
1899
There are few things we love more than a mix of horror, mystery and a period setting. So we’re looking foward to 1899, a twisty multilingual epic from the creators of cult favourite Dark. Obviously 1899 is keeping its plot cards close to its chest, but we know that the series is predominantly set on board ocean liner the Kerberos, where nothing is what it seems for a group of migrants crossing the Atlantic from Europe, to start a new life in America.
Officially, 1899 is “coming soon” to Netflix, but reports suggest it will debut in the Northern Hemisphere Fall/Winter.
Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities
Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities is an upcoming American horror anthology series created by Del Toro for Netflix. The series features eight unique and original horror stories determined to challenge the classic horror genre, and range from macabre to magical, gothic to grotesque and classically creepy.
They’re brought to life by a team of writers and directors personally chosen by the Shape of Water filmmaker. This includes the directors of The Babadook, Splice, Mandy, and many more. In front of the camera, meanwhile, are the likes of Ben Barnes, Essie Davis, Andrew Lincoln, F. Murray Abraham, Tim Blake Nelson, Crispin Glover, Peter Weller, Rupert Grint and Sofia Boutella.
There’s no official release date yet, but The Cabinet of Curiosities will be out before the end of 2022.
The Midnight Club
Finally, if you prefer your creepiness a tiny bit less intense, and more young adult orientated, there’s The Midnight Club. Based on the Christopher Pike novel (from the days of the teen horror craze spearheaded by RL Stine), The Midnight Club is brought to life by the creators of The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass. In fact, Hill House’s Mike Flanagan has been surprisingly hands-on with the series, serving as co-creator, co-showrunner and co-writer on almost all of the 10 episodes.
In this series with an anthology bent, eight terminally ill members of the Midnight Club meet in a mysterious manor hourse every night to tell sinister stories β and look for signs of the supernatural. The Midnight Club actually has a release date: 7 October.
Geeked Week is a five-day event, with each day devoted to a different entertainment format. Following Series, Day 2 (today) is devoted to movies, Day 3 focuses on animation (here’s hoping for a Love Death + Robots Vol. 5 greenlight announcement), Day 4 is dedicated entirely to Stranger Things, and the week caps off with Netflix gaming. Here’s the full breakdown of the lineup.
