As of tomorrow, 1 March, it’s officially autumn in South Africa, which means (at least in theory) a general shift from socialising under the sun to snuggles on the couch as the days start getting shorter and colder. Fortunately Disney+ will keep you entertained with a combination of new original series, films and documentaries. Plus, there’s the return of Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 on 14 March, plus the addition of Gilmore Girls in its seven season entirety from 1 March.
Daredevil: Born Again (Series)
The series that started it all for Marvel on the small screen returns. Though now on Disney+ instead of Netflix, Daredevil: Born Again continues the story of blind defense attorney Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) who previously operated as Hell’s Kitchen vigilante Daredevil. With his former rival Wilson Fisk, AKA Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), on the political rise, and the emergence of new criminal threats like White Tiger and Muse, Matt is tempted to once more suit up and deliver some decidedly R-rated justice. Look out for returnees Elden Henson as Franklin “Foggy” Nelson, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, and even Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher:
The nine-episode first season of Daredevil: Born Again kicks off on 5 March with two episodes. Thereafter, there will be one or two new episodes weekly.
Moana 2 (Film)
Moana 2 on Disney+ already? Believe it. The House of Mouse’s big animated adventure for the 2024 holiday season is heading to streaming this month. Set three years after the events of the first film, in musical Moana 2, inspired by Polynesian myth and legend, our title heroine (voiced by Auliʻi Cravalho) reunites with demigod friend Maui (Dwayne Johnson) and assembles a new crew to cross treacherous seas and find the mythical island of Motufetu. Here’s our review if you need convincing of a watch.
Watch Moana 2 on Disney+ from 12 March.
O’Dessa (Film)
Still on matters of musical voyages of discovery, there’s post-apocalyptic rock opera O’Dessa, released under the Searchlight Pictures banner. In O’Dessa, Stranger Things’s Sadie Sink plays a farm girl who embarks on a journey to retrieve a family heirloom and in the process meets her one true love and stirs up rebellion against despotic rulers. Also starring are Kelvin Harrison Jr., Regina Hall and Murray Bartlett. This one has surreal cult hit written all over it.
Stream O’Dessa from 13 March.
David Blaine Do Not Attempt (Documentary Series)
David Blaine Do Not Attempt is a six-part National Geographic documentary series that sees the popular illusionist and endurance artist travel the world in order to explore the cultures, rituals and people who perform unbelievable feats that look like magic. It’s a journey that will take Blaine all the way from Brazil, across India and South East Asia, to Japan, the Artic Circle and even South Africa. And, of course, he’ll attempt to replicate the abilities of those he meets, hence the disclaimer in the series title.
David Blaine Do Not Attempt launches on 24 March with 2 episodes.
