A new month means a whole new calendar of entertainment coming your way. In terms of offerings from Disney+, there’s not a whole lot of brand new debuts in July, but there are a number of returning favourites, like Futurama Season 12 (streaming from 29 July) and the massively acclaimed Abbott Elementary S3 Part 2 (10 July). Plus, having premiered last month in a stacked June (alongside The Bear S3), the latest Star Wars series, everyone’s-talking-about-it The Acolyte drops its season finale on 17 July, making that the date you’ll be able to binge all 8 episodes.
Meanwhile, with Shark Week 2024 kicking off on 7 July, four documentaries from National Geographic, Saved From a Shark, Shark Eat Shark, Bull Shark Bandits and Sharkcano: Hawaii are joining the streamer this month. Finally, it’s always recommended that you regularly check the Movie category on the Disney+ app, as there are almost always surprise additions.
Now, onto our top viewing picks for the month.
Bluey Minisodes (Series)
Can’t get enough of Australian animated series Bluey, whether you’re a littlie or all grown up? Check out this collection of one- to three-minute Bluey Minisodes from Joe Brumm, creator of the preschool series, and produced by Ludo Studio. The shorts highlight funny and sweet moments featuring Bluey and her sister Bingo, leaning into playful interactions and games that further explore the characters and world of Bluey.
All 7 Minisodes of Bluey are available from 3 July.
Brats (Documentary Film)
No. Not Bratz. Brats. Actor turned filmmaker Andrew McCarthy, himself a member of the group of young movie stars branded the “Brat Pack”in the 1980s, has created this retrospective. McCarthy reunites with his fellow Brat Packers – including Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Jon Cryer, Lea Thompson, and Timothy Hutton – to explore how the label, and resulting media attention, affected them, along with reminiscing about appearing in coming of age movies that shaped a generation.
Watch Brats on Disney+ from 5 July.
Descendants: The Rise of Red (Film)
It hasn’t officially been confirmed for Disney+ in South Africa this month, but there’s no reason to believe we won’t be getting the fourth entry in Disney’s musical fantasy film series.
A spin-off of the previous three movies about the offspring of Disney villains, and a follow-up to Descendants: The Royal Wedding, this installment sees Red (Kylie Cantrall), the rebellious daughter of the Queen of Hearts (Rita Ora), teaming up with Cinderella’s daughter Chloe (Malia Baker). Together, they travel back in time to prevent the incident that turns Red’s mother evil.
Descendants: The Rise Of Red is available 12 July.
