New month, new bumper content drop from African streamer Showmax. Below you’ll find out standout new additions for September, while you can find Showmax’s full offering, including documentaries and kids’ entertainment here.

Series

On the returning show front, you can binge period crime drama Perry Mason S2 from 11 September, along with raunchy comedy drama Minx S2. Meanwhile, the Hugh Laurie fronted sci-fi comedy Avenue 5 is back for its second and final season on 25 September.

Of the new series, must-watch this month is Outlaws, a Showmax Original, and ultra-rare South African Western. Set in the present day, this tense drama takes place on the border between KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho, and centres on two families at war with each other: the Zulu, cattle-farming Biyela clan and the Basotho, cattle-raiding Ts’eoles. Outlaws comes from Tshedza Pictures’ Phathu Makwarela and Gwydion Beynon, the same team behind the award-winning likes of The Republic and The River.

Episodes of Outlaws drop every Wednesday from 6 September.

On the international series front, we’re most excited for action crime tale Tulsa King, which stars Sylvester Stallone in his first-ever starring role on the small screen. Stallone plays New York mafia capo Dwight “The General” Manfredi, who’s released from prison after 25 years, and immediately exiled by his boss to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Realising that his mob family may not have his best interests at heart, Dwight sets out to build a criminal empire of his own, starting with an unlikely new crew.

Watch Tulsa King S1 in its nine-episode entirety from today, 4 September.

Wildfires raging around the world make new drama Fire Country especially topical. From the producers of Grey’s Anatomy, and Jerry Bruckheimer, the series follows Bode Donovan (Max Thieriot), a former golden boy turned convict, who seeks redemption by joining an unconventional prison release firefighting programme in Northern California, where he and other inmates help extinguish massive, unpredictable wildfires. Complicating matters further, the assignment takes him to his rural hometown.

Binge all 22 episodes of Fire Country S1 from 18 September.

Dark Aussie comedy Totally Completely Fine looks right up our alley. Last Night In Soho’s Thomasin McKenzie is troubled party girl Vivian, who inherits a cliffside property from her estranged, recently deceased grandfather… only to discover it’s a popular suicide site. Vivian finds herself with the surprise responsibility of stepping in to help those who wish to end their lives by jumping off the cliff. Although that’s still easier than changing her own life.

Catch Totally Completely Fine with two episodes dropping every Wednesday from 6 September.

Films

Never seen the Mission: Impossible film series, or missed a few entries in the long-running, action-packed Tom Cruise franchise? Showmax is adding all the movies (barring this year’s Dead Reckoning Part One) on 14 September. You can also watch the Matrix trilogy (11 September), all three Hangover movies (21 September), and both Zoolanders (25 September), in addition to loads more blockbusters.

As for new movie additions, our first pick of the month is the charming, and highly acclaimed, Mrs Harris Goes To Paris. Based on Paul Gallico’s novel, this period comedy-drama centres on a British housekeeper (Lesley Manville) whose dream to own a couture Christian Dior gown takes her on an extraordinary adventure to France in 1957.

Watch Mrs Harris Goes To Paris from 7 September.

For a complete tonal shift, there’s thriller Breaking. Described as a modern day Dog Day Afternoon, and based on a true story, Breaking sees John Boyega deliver a career-best performance (to date anyway) as ex-Marine Brian Brown-Easley, who takes bank employees hostage after being denied support from Veterans Affairs. Also with Nicole Beharie, Selenis Leyva, and Michael Kenneth Williams.

Watch Breaking from 21 September.
