A new month means a whole new release calendar for Showmax. You can see everything that’s coming to the streaming service in November here (spoiler: it’s a lot!), but here’s what caught our eye.
Series
In addition to returning seasons for Love Life (Season 2), Mayans M.C. (Season 3), For Life (Season 2) and the continuation of Chucky Season 1, which started last month, here are new arrivals to add to your Must Watch list.
If Mare of Easttown reminded you how brilliant Jean Smart is, then you should check out her Emmy Award-winning performance in Hacks. This massively acclaimed comedy drama centres on legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance (Smart), who takes on an entitled, down-on-her-luck Gen Z comedy writer (Hannah Einbinder) in a bid to find fresh material and remain relevant. Watch now.
Filling the hole left by Game of Thrones, and one of the OG R-rated historical romps Rome (remember that one?), is Domina. This Sky Originals series centres on Livia Drusilla (award-winning Polish actress Kasia Smutniak), regarded as one of the greatest women of history due to her political influence, including over her husband, Roman emperor Augustus Caesar. Also in the cast are Liam Cunningham, Claire Forlani, and Tom Glynn-Carney. Watch now.
Also from the other side of the Pond, and another complete change of direction, is BBC miniseries The Pursuit of Love, based on the novel by Nancy Mitford. Lily James and Emily Beecham star in this WWII-period romantic comedy about cousins intent on seeking out the perfect husband… misadventures be damned. Andrew Scott and Dominic West also star in what is the directorial debut of actress Emily Mortimer. Watch now.
Movies
Curious about director Robert Zemeckis’s 2020 adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Witches? As of November 22, you can watch the reimagining on Showmax. The Witches stars Oscar winners Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch, and Octavia Spencer as Agatha Hansen, the grandmother of recently orphaned Charlie (Jahzir Kadeem). If you’re unfamiliar with the plot of The Witches, it falls to the Hansens to stop America’s witches when they find themselves staying in the same hotel. Also with Stanley Tucci, and Chris Rock voice over.
There is no real concept of time in 2021, and reiterating that fact is time loop comedy Palm Springs. Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Cristin Milioti (How I Met Your Mother) star in this quirky romance about two strangers who meet at a wedding in Palm Springs, only to get stuck repeating the same day over and over. Palm Springs won the 2021 Critics Choice Award for Best Comedy and has an impressive 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Watch from November 15.
