Having re-launched last month with a ton of new content, the new Showmax is now continuing the trend in March. Below you’ll find what we’re specifically watching, while you can find a complete schedule rundown here.
Series
When it comes to international series, Showmax in March is more about returning favourites than standout debuts. Some of the popular returnees include Chicago Med Season 8 (from 1 March), Alan Tudyk’s Resident Alien S3 (from 5 March), UK women’s prison drama Time S2 (8 March), Billions S7 (11 March) plus the new Quantum Leap, with Season 2’s weekly episodes landing from 12 March. Also, for those who prefer binge viewing, you’ll be able to watch Halo S2 in it entirety from 22 March.
If you’re in the mood for something fresh, meanwhile, we recommend Showmax Original documentary series The Illuminated. Previous non-fiction Showmax Originals have covered crime and sex, but not really that other foundation of South African life: religion. The Illuminated rectifies that by exploring non-mainstream groups and beliefs, including Israelvisie, The Church of Scientology, Christ In Me Collective, corporate transformational coaching, new evangelical churches, and even Matthew Naidoo’s cultish influence over the Lotters. The Illuminated premieres on 6 March, with new episodes on Wednesdays.
The trailer makes it look more like a drama than comedy, but South African crime tale Koek is apparently darkly comic. Cape Town housewife Christelle Smit (Cindy Swanepoel) is shocked to discover her husband is having an affair, and the surprises keep coming when she learns the mistress is a stripper named Candi Floss, who works at a club called Koeksusters. In trying to untangle the mess, Christelle finds herself indebted to Sandra Prisloo’s brandy-drinking, cigar-smoking, leopard-print-loving, and kidney-stealing mob boss.
Having debuted on 29 February, watch Koek now, with new episodes every Thursday.
For something a little different and more globally diverse, there’s CANAL+’s International Emmy-nominated miniseries Infiniti, which mixes murder mystery and science fiction. The International Space Station (ISS) has gone silent when a waxed, decapitated body of one of the astronauts is found on a roof in Kazakhstan. A French astronaut (Céline Sallette), dismissed from the space programme, and a Kazakh cop (Daniyar Alshinov), disowned by his ranking hierarchy, set out to solve this paradox.
Watch the six-episode Infiniti, with episode drops on Mondays, from 4 March.
Films
Before we jump into our top picks, in terms of box-set releases on Showmax in March, look out for all The Mummy films, including spin-off The Scorpion King, from 14 March; and a Fast and Furious dump, covering all the high-octane blockbusters from 4 to Hobbs & Shaw, on 7 March.
Otherwise, it’s a good month for action thrillers. Stream Liam Neeson’s Retribution from 25 March, where our hero is forced to race around Berlin, completing illicit tasks or the bomb under his car seat will go off. Then there’s The Equalizer 3, which caps off leading man Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua’s intense and acclaimed trilogy. Former government operative Robert McCall (Washington) has finally found peace in Southern Italy. However, he’s forced into violent action once more when his new friends are targeted by the Mafia. Also starring Dakota Fanning. Watch The Equalizer 3 now.
For the kids meanwhile, the emphasis is on family-friendly superheroics. Big screen origin story Miraculous: Ladybug and Cat Noir: The Movie comes to Showmax on 25 March, while PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie joins the streamer on 31 March. In PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, the heroic pups develop special abilities after a magical meteor lands in Adventure City. While the pups have new ways to help people, things take a turn for the worse when the pups’ arch-rival Humdinger, and a mad scientist, plot to steal their powers.
