Film
Okay, we have to include something on the list that is vaguely Valentine’s-ish, so here’s something with a self-love bent. Gebokste Liefde is an Afrikaans-language romantic comedy (with English subtitles) about a divorced single mom, Suma-Lee (Tarryn Wyngaard), beaten down by life… until she joins a boxing gym and finally finds the courage to stand up for herself and what she wants. And that includes her hunky coach (Jandré le Roux), whose life is as messy as hers.
Stream Gebokste Liefde from Friday, 7 February.
Audiences love Illumination’s Despicable Me and spin-off Minions movies. The good news, then, is that this February, the latest entry in the franchise, Despicable Me 4 comes to the small screen. With an all-star voice cast that includes returnees Steve Carrell and Kristen Wiig, alongside Will Ferrell and Sofia Vergara, Despicable Me sees reformed supervillain Gru and his family – now with Gru Jr in tow – forced to go on the run by the emergence of enemies Maxime Le Mal and Valentina.
Despicable Me 4 is on Showmax from Thursday, 20 February.
Still speaking of animated family entertainment (although in this case, speaking to pre-schoolers especially), streaming on Showmax from Monday, 10 February is acclaimed short Tiddler, about the adventures of a lost little fish with a big imagination. Tiddler is adapted from the picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.
