It’s another week where you can catch your breath, and possibly catch up on the blockbuster action you’ve missed at the movies. Only two new films are hitting South African cinemas this week, and one is an R-rated comedy while the other is a horror sequel. As a heads up, next Friday sees the release of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1.
For an Asian American spin on the “Girls Behaving Badly” comedy sub-genre, check out Joy Ride, from the co-screenwriter of Crazy Rich Asians, and the producers of Neighbors. Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu star in this tale of four loosely connected friends who embark on a raunchy international adventure that quickly goes sideways. It all starts when Audrey (Park), who was raised by white adoptive parents, sets out to discover her Chinese birth mother in the first step of reconnecting with her cultural identity.
Set ten years after the events in Insidious and Insidious 2, Insidious: The Red Door is the fifth entry in the supernatural horror series. It also marks the directorial debut of star Patrick Wilson. The Red Door promises to be in the final chapter in the Lambert family’s terrifying saga, as father (Wilson) and now college-aged son (Ty Simpkins) must use their astral projection abilities to venture deeper into The Further than ever before. This to face their family’s dark past, dig up repressed memories, and put their demons to rest once and for all. Also with a returning Rose Byrne and Lin Shaye.
