It’s a “take a breath” week at South African cinemas before the blockbuster likes of Twisters and Deadpool & Wolverine release, and the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) kicks off. On offer instead are more niche experiences, like Nu Metro’s live Xperience Stand-Up Comedy event (at Canal Walk), sweeping Bollywood romance Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, Ster Kinekor’s rerelease of Oscar-winning Braveheart, and a recording of the Met Opera’s Madama Butterfly, featuring soprano Asmik Grigorian.

Your lone movie debut this week – and again it’s in very limited release – is Lilly, a drama and true story. Patricia Clarkson plays Lilly Ledbetter, an Alabama factory worker who endured 20 years of discrimination and harassment. On approaching retirement and learning that her company paid her only half of what her male counterparts earned, Lilly took her fight for justice all the way to the Supreme Court, transforming pay equality.
