In terms of this week’s new cinema releases in South Africa, it’s a case of one for the kids, and one for the kids at heart, who love pulpy, whip-cracking adventure and derring-do. Find out more about both of them below.
One more time. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the final big screen outing for Harrison Ford as Nazi-punching, whip-cracking archaeologist Indiana Jones. In this fifth entry in the Indy film series, our hero is near retirement and struggling to fit into a vastly different 1960s world. However, when an old enemy sets their sights on an ancient and powerful artifact, Indy must take action once more, joined by his goddaughter (Phoebe Waller-Bridge). Also in the cast of this 154-minute globe-trotting adventure are Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, and Mads Mikkelsen. Ford v Ferrari and Logan’s James Mangold in the director’s chair, replacing Steven Spielberg.
From DreamWorks Animation comes Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken an animated coming-of-age comedy that seems to be taking a light jab at The Little Mermaid. Sweet, awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor) is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, but she mostly just feels invisible. Then she learns that she is a direct descendant of battle-hardened krakens who have protected the world from mermaids for generations, and is also destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother, the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas (Jane Fonda). Also with the voices of Toni Collette, and Annie Murphy.
