Why is it that shorter working weeks feel so much more manic than their traditional five-day version? If you need a distraction this weekend in South Africa, to recover, movie lovers have four new options to choose from at cinemas. And, yes, given the time of year, one of them is a horror film.
Gareth Edwards, the filmmaker behind Godzilla (2014) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, takes up writing and directing responsibilities for ambitious new sci-fi actioner The Creator, which you can also watch at IMAX. Set during a future war between humanity and AI forces, hardened soldier Joshua (John David Washington) is recruited to find and destroy a world-ending weapon developed by the AI’s elusive architect, known as The Creator. The Dive is here to deliver your survival thriller kicks. Louisa Krause and Sophie Lowe star in this tale of sisters, Drew and May, whose scuba dive at one of the world’s most remote spots transforms from dream to nightmare after a rockfall pins May 28 metres deep under the water. So begins a frantic race to survive, where Drew must use all her ingenuity, resourcefulness, and fortitude to try and keep her sister from imminent death – with very little chance of external help or rescue.
The Saw horror franchise makes a return with Saw X, the tenth film in this disturbingly popular series. This time around, the torture porn action is set between the events of Saw I and II, where a sick and desperate John Kramer (Tobin Bell) travels to Mexico for a risky medical procedure, only to be defrauded. Armed with a newfound purpose, the infamous serial killer returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral way through devious, deranged, and ingenious traps.
From writer-director Corne van Rooyen comes Afrikaans-language South African comedy Hans Steek Die Rubicon Oor, based on the book of the same name. Ninety-year-old widower Hans (Pierre van Pletzen) is forced into a repressive old-age-home with One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest style militancy. Face with the draconian management, Hans becomes a rebel and activist in defense of growing old on your own terms. Also with Tobie Cronjé and Sandra Prinsloo.
