We must be on the cusp of the holidays because the notable cinema releases are arriving thick and fast. This week, Disney’s highly anticipated sequel Moana 2 and heady A24 thriller Heretic, starring a devious Hugh Grant, lead the pack.

Apart for this week’s trio of new movies, South Africans can check out this week’s Throwback Cinema movie, La Bamba, the tragic biographical story of Ritchie Valens. Meanwhile, Live theatre fans aren’t left out as they can watch Nye in select Nouveau cinemas.

Moana 2 is Disney’s big animated musical adventure for the holiday season. Together again, eight years after the original film, are Moana, the island not-a-princess turned wayfinder, and trickster demi-god Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson). After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey into dangerous, long-lost waters that pit our heroine against wicked gods and other challenging creatures as she strives to reconnect all the people and communities of Oceania.

Look out for our Moana 2 review soon.

From A24 Pictures and writer/director duo Scott Beck and Bryan Wood – who penned A Quiet Place – comes psychological horror film Heretic. Two young Mormon missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) become trapped in a deadly game of cat and mouse when they knock on the door of the diabolical Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant). Trapped in his home, they must turn to their faith if they want to make it out alive.

Sci-fi thriller Elevation is set in a post-apocalyptic world where people are hunted by creatures that can’t be killed, and, for whatever reason, humanity is only safe if they stay above a certain altitude. A single father (Anthony Mackie) and two women must venture from the safety of their homes in the Rocky Mountains and face the monsters in order to save the life of a young boy. Elevation also stars Morena Baccarin and Maddie Hasson.
