The Easter long weekend is upon us, and that means more time for movie watching. A number of niche new viewing options come to South African cinemas this week, like a recording of The Royal Opera’s Madama Butterfly, spiky Bollywood comedy Crew, espionage-themed anime Spy × Family Code: White and, appropriate for the weekend, the chance to watch the first two episodes of Jesus-centred drama series The Chosen: Season 4.
Apart from these exclusives, movie fans have two fresh feature films to choose from – and one is a monstrously epic blockbuster.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the next chapter in the MonsterVerse, following the events of Godzilla vs. Kong. This time, King Kong and Godzilla are forced to team up to stop a undiscovered threat hidden within our world. Shot specifically for IMAX, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire promises to explore the histories of these iconic Titans, their origins plus the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond. The human cast includes Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Dan Stevens, with Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard returning to oversee the action.
For those who prefer their entertainment more grounded, there’s gritty drama Asphalt City. Ollie Cross (Tye Sheridan) is a young paramedic assigned to the NYC night shift with an uncompromising and seasoned partner Gene Rutkovsky (Sean Penn). As the pair respond to each 911 call, Ollie gets a crash course in lifesaving techniques and the brutal stresses of the job.
