The second month of 2025 is capping with a relatively quiet week at South African cinemas. In addition to two debuting releases, the only other “new” option for movie lovers is a revisit of Reese Witherspoon romance Sweet Home Alabama.


The Monkey comes with some serious horror pedigree in the form of writer-director Osgood Perkins, producer James Wan, and author Stephen King providing the source material for this gory, pitch-black comedy. Twin brothers (played by Christian Convery as adolescents, and Theo James as adults) realise that their father’s vintage toy monkey triggers horrific deaths. Though they discard the toy and move on, decades later, bodies start piling up once more.

Brave the Dark is the latest uplifting drama from Angel Studios, the same company behind Sound of Freedom and Cabrini. Learning that one of his students Nate (Nicholas Hamilton) has been living out of his car, and has even been jailed, teacher Mr. Deen (Jared Harris) becomes determined to curb Nate’s self-destructive behaviour. How far will Mr. Deen go to save a despairing kid from his demons?
