Two new films release across South Africa today, although the upcoming week does include some bonus big screen treats for locals.

Nu Metro has a one show only screening this Friday, at 7pm, of Billie Eilish: Live at the O2. The live concert recording will be shown on Nu Metro’s giant Xtreme screens, and you can book here.

Meanwhile, if you’re in Johannesburg, you can check out the Joburg Film Festival, running from Wednesday 1 February to Sunday 5 February 2023, at Cinema Nouveau Rosebank Mall, and Ster-Kinekor cinemas in Sandton City and Maponya Mall. The Festival will include films and feature documentaries from over 35 countries, throwing in 20 African premieres, 27 South African premieres, and even Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, with Brendan Fraser in a career revitalizing role. Check out all the participating films, their screening times, and book now here.

Plane

Don’t dismiss this action thriller as a cookie cutter B-grade Gerard Butler flick. Plane is reportedly nothing exceptional, but it’s still solidly entertaining, having won over reviewers and audiences overseas. The film centres on a commercial aircraft pilot (Butler) who is forced to make an emergency landing in a troubled region of the Philippines. Captain Brodie Torrance’s problems escalate when dangerous rebels take most of the passengers hostage, forcing Torrance to join forces with Mike Colter’s homicide suspect.

Mummies

Schools may be back post summer holidays, but animated family adventures are still arriving in cinemas to offer an escape from reality. From Warner Bros. Pictures, Mummies follows three ancient Egyptian mummies who live in a secret underground city. When their Royal Family’s ring is stolen by an ambitious archaeologist, our heroes end up in present-day London. Shenanigans ensue. Featuring the voices of Joe Thomas, Eleanor Tomlinson, Celia Imrie, Hugh Bonneville, and Sean Bean.
