Thursday, 27 April, is a holiday in South Africa, so the week’s new movies are releasing a day early, TODAY, to celebrate. Here are five big screen debuts to keep you occupied, especially if you took Friday off to gift yourself a five-day weekend. Enjoy!
Polite Society
Wild UK action comedy Polite Society centres on two British-Pakistani sisters, and brings together Bollywood flair with English wryness. The film follows martial artist and stunt woman-in-training Ria Khan (Bridgerton’s Priya Kansara) who believes she must save her older sister Lena (Umbrella Academy’s Ritu Arya) from her impending marriage after the latter drops out of art school. After enlisting the help of her friends, Ria attempts to pull off the most ambitious of all wedding heists in the name of sisterhood.
To Catch a Killer
Craving something in the vein of Silence of the Lambs… but perhaps less sordid? Then check out new mystery crime thriller To Catch a Killer, starring Shailene Woodley, Ben Mendelsohn, and Jovan Adepo. Eleanor is a young police investigator wrestling with the demons of her past when she is recruited by the FBI’s chief investigator to help catch a disturbed, unpredictable killer. Given her tortured psyche, Eleanor may be the only person who can understand the mind of their assailant and bring him to justice.
The Black Demon
It’s been a while since we last had a trashy monster shark movie. Horror thriller The Black Demon is here to rectify that. Paul Sturges (Josh Lucas) takes his family on a trip to Mexico to inspect an oil rig his company owns. However, on arrival, he finds it almost abandoned with only a few terrified workers left who tell him that the collapsing rig has been repeatedly attacked by a monstrous shark from local legend. Cue a desperate battle for survival. Also with Jorge A. Jimenez, and Fernanda Urrejola.
Epic Tails
Epic Tails is a cute animated adventure for the whole family, with a message about never judging heroes by their size. Set in Ancient Greece, the film centres on Pattie the mouse, who leaps into action when her port city home is threatened by the wrath of Poseidon. Along with various furry friends, and aged hero Jason (of the Argonauts fame), Pattie sets sail, facing fierce storms, dangerous sea creatures and treacherous pirates during their quest to save the day.
Big George Foreman
Wrapping this week’s set of new movies is sports drama and biopic Big George Foreman (full title Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World). Khris Davis plays the iconic boxer in this remarkable true story of one of the greatest comebacks of all time, when Foreman became the oldest and most improbable World Heavyweight Boxing Champion ever. Forest Whitaker plays Foreman’s trainer and mentor.
