Tense thrillers and feel-good family fare are the order of the week at South African cinemas from this Friday. Meanwhile, the four notable new releases are joined by Bollywood romantic comedy Mere Husband Ki Biwi and Throwback re-release While You Were Sleeping starring Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman.
Real-life thriller September 5 takes audiences back to the 1972 Munich Olympics, revisiting the hostage crisis involving Israeli athletes. More specifically, the film centres on the ABC Sports crew covering the Games, and how they found themselves ideally positioned to get the story out to the world, live, elevating their status as reporters in the process. September 5 is nominated for Best Original Screenplay at this year’s Academy Awards. Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro and Ben Chaplin lead the cast.
One of the most highly rated film series of all time has a new entry. Paddington in Peru is the third family adventure based on Michael Bond’s beloved book series, although this time with Dougal Wilson stepping in for Paul King as director, and Emily Mortimer replacing Sally Hawkins in front of the camera. Paddington in Peru sees the polite little bear return to his home country with the Brown family in tow. However, with Aunt Lucy missing, the band must venture out into the Amazon rainforest and up Peruvian mountains. New faces in the cast include Olivia Colman and Antonio Banderas.

Bridgerton and Fair Play star Phoebe Dynevor takes centre stage in globetrotting espionage thriller Inheritance. When a grieving Maya reunites with her estranged father Sam (Rhys Ifans), she learns that he was once a spy. Thrust into his world, she finds herself naturally equipped with skills to unravel an international conspiracy. Inheritance, made by Limitless and Divergent’s Neil Burger, is notable for being entirely shot on an iPhone to add a credible, street-level feel to events.
Need some feelgood drama in your life? Based on a true story, The Unbreakable Boy comes from the studio behind Wonder and Jesus Revolution, with the latter’s writer stepping up as screenwriter and director here. Zachary Levi and Meghann Fahy play parents inspired by their young son as much as they worry for him. This because Austin (Jacob Laval) is both autistic and has brittle bone disease. However, Austin’s unbreakable spirit and life-affirming view unites everyone around him.
