The mid-year blockbuster season is over, which means it’s time for more indie fare as well as prestige cinema sure to be in the running for numerous accolades come award season. Both feature this week as new releases hitting South African cinemas.
Killers of the Flower Moon is the latest from legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese, as well as the latest movie to reunite the director with leading man Leonardo DiCaprio. In this Western crime epic, based on a true story and Pulitzer Prize-nominated non-fiction expose, a young government agent (Jesse Plemons) investigates a series of murders in northeastern Oklahoma in the 1920s after oil is found on Osage tribal lands.
Killers of the Flower Moon’s impressive ensemble cast is led by DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone, and the film has a 3.5 hour running time. Following its cinema run, it will be coming to Apple TV+ at a future unspecified date.
Part dark comedy, part thriller, Cat Person sees college sophomore Margot (CODA’s Emilia Jones) discover that the older man (Succession’s Nicholas Braun) she’s been flirting with over texts doesn’t match the person she meets in real life. This razor-sharp exploration of the gender divide, and the pitfalls of modern dating, is based on the New Yorker short story of the same name. It comes from filmmaker Susanna Fogel, who directed The Spy Who Dumped Me, and co-wrote Booksmart.
