August is starting strong at South African cinemas with four new notable releases. This is in addition to Bollywood love story Auron Mein Kahan Dumm Tha, and the opportunity to relive that “Show me the money” moment from Jerry Maguire as part of Ster Kinekor’s R50 Throwback Cinema offering.
Plus, more good news for movie fans is that Ster Kinekor has just debuted a new bundle for all SK Club members. From thriller master M. Night Shyamalan, Trap sees a father and daughter stuck in the middle of a sinister event: authorities have locked down a pop concert in an attempt to catch a brutal serial killer. Mostly we’re happy to see the ongoing career resurgence of star Josh Hartnett. As a side note, it’s advisable that you don’t watch the trailer below if you want a completely unspoiled experience.
Crime drama The Bikeriders follows fictional Midwestern motorcycle club, the Vandals as it evolves in the 1960s from a welcoming place for local outsiders into a violent and sinister gang. New member Benny (Austin Butler) must choose between his loyalty to the club, headed by Johnny (Tom Hardy), and his love for strong-willed Kathy (Jodie Comer). Also with Michael Shannon and Norman Reedus.
No, this horror film isn’t a sequel to The Pope’s Exorcist. The Exorcism sees a troubled actor (Russell Crowe) start to mentally unravel while filming a horror film about demonic possession. His daughter (Ryan Simpkins) initially suspects he’s slipping back into past addictions, but there is another, even more disturbing possibility. Also with Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, and Fraser’s David Hyde Pierce.
Finally, for something less intense this week, there’s family-friendly adventure Harold and the Purple Crayon. Based on the beloved children’s book by Crockett Johnson, adventurous book character Harold can make anything come to life by drawing it. When he grows up (into Zachary Levi), he draws himself off the book’s pages and into the real world, where his crayon causes all kinds of trouble. Also with Zooey Deschanel, and Lil Rel Howery.
