If South African film fans aren’t in Durban, they have limited new cinema release options this week because locally the period is all about the Durban International Film Festival, running across the east coast city from 18 – 28 July. DIFF is the oldest and largest film festival in Southern Africa, having been founded in 1979. This year it will see the screening of over 90 movies, including documentaries, shorts and student films. You can check out the full lineup here.

As for everyone else, there’s Bollywood comedy Bad Newz, Ster Kinekor’s Throwback re-release for this week, The Mummy Returns, and anime Gundam Seed Freedom. Which leaves just one new feature film screening in wide release…

Inspired by real-life events, there’s South African dark comedy drama The Bad Bishop. Realising its potential as a path out of poverty, a charismatic young man decides to start his own church with a group of misfits. Faking miracles, they get rich fast, which attracts enemies and puts their own sinful behaviour in the spotlight. Starring Dumisani Mbebe, Dineo Nchabeleng, and Tebatso Mashishi.
