Of the big screen releases in South Africa this week, the biggest is unquestionably superhero sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods. As is often the case, the blockbuster actioner opens alongside a movie that will appeal to a very different audience. Find out all about your new options below.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Its release has been moved around quite a bit due to the pandemic and the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, but sequel (and latest DC Extended Universe entry) Shazam! Fury of the Gods is finally here. In this action comedy adventure, Billy Batson (Asher Angel) and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult superhero alter-egos. Billy, of course, assumes the most responsibility as the first and greatest of the hero family, Shazam (Zachary Levi). The stakes are raised when the vengeful Daughters of Atlas (played by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu), arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, leading to a battle that will determine the fate of the world.

The Inspection

Award-winning independent drama The Inspection sees writer-director Elegance Bratton tell his own life story as a young, gay Black man, who joins the Marines after being rejected by his homophobic mother. Main character Ellis French (Jeremy Pope) finds himself in boot camp on Parris Island, South Carolina, and while basic training is gruelling enough, our hero is targeted for near-lethal hazing by his training instructor (Bokeem Woodbine) and some fellow recruits. Still, Ellis’s struggle will result in greater personal strength and an unexpected sense of belonging as he finds acceptance in an unexpected place. Gabrielle Union plays Ellis’s police officer mother.
