When it comes to escaping the summer heat by retreating into the cool, comfortable dark of a cinema, South Africans have two new movie options this week. One is a superhero ensemble and the other is a musical biopic. Time to learn more about them both below.
Joining the two Venom movies, Morbius, and upcoming Kraven the Hunter is Madame Web, the latest entry in Sony’s spin-off Spider-Man Universe. If the quality of those earlier films is anything to go by, movie fans should keep their expectations very much in check for this super-powered action adventure, where New York paramedic Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) develops clairvoyant abilities, and must protect three young women – Julia Cornwall (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor), Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced) – after visions reveal a masked adversary (Tahar Rahim) wants these future Spider-Women dead.
As you can probably guess from the title, Bob Marley: One Love is based on the life of iconic Jamaican singer-songwriter Bob Marley, who is played here by Kingsley Ben-Adir. Weirdly enough, this is the first-ever big screen biopic centred on the revolutionary reggae musician. Made in partnership with the Marley family, the film explores how the singer overcame adversity, and how his inspiring message of love and unity put a target on his back. Lashana Lynch plays Bob’s wife Rita.
