Three new movies arrive in South African cinemas this Friday, with the unquestionable biggie being Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, starring Tom Cruise.

Espionage actioner Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is over 2 hours and 40 minutes of globe-trotting battles, betrayals and Tom Cruise flirting with death as he performs his own epic stunts. In this seventh M:I film, Ethan Hunt (Cruise) faces the realisation that nothing can matter more than his mission to stop an all-powerful enemy with the ability to reshape humanity’s future – not even the lives of those he cares about. Also with Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff and Esai Morales.

Horror thriller You’re Next is evidently a South African stab at the likes of Scream. Detective Khumalo finds himself tangled in a complex case when a bloodied girl runs into his station. Khumalo turns to his old friend, Detective Khan, for help, and their investigation leads down a path of murder and deceit linked to social media. As a side comment, given the standard of local film productions in recent years, it’s shocking how amateurish this one looks.

Boonie Bears: Guardian Code is an animated family comedy out of China. In this ninth (?!) big screen Boonie Bears adventure, Briar and Bramble are determined to find out the truth about their mother, who they apparently lost in a forest fire when they were cubs. The story begins when the brothers’ enemy-turned-ally Vick brings them to a robot research institute, where they receive unexpected news about their mama bear.
