If you thought there wasn’t going to be more multiverse madness after Doctor Strange returned to cinemas last week, then you obviously weren’t looking forward to Everything Everywhere All At Once as much as I am. Opening alongside A24’s strangest film yet (at least until Men releases in July) is a new adaptation of Stephen King’s sci-fi horror Firestarter (Drew Barrymore played the title character back in 1984); a local psychological thriller in the form of The Castle; and a second local film, the hard-hitting action-thriller Indemnity. All fantastic films to watch on Friday the 13th!
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., James Hong and Jamie Lee Curtis star in the latest mind-bending A24 sci-fi adventure, Everything Everywhere All At Once. When an interdimensional rupture unravels reality, an unlikely hero must channel her newfound powers to fight bizarre and bewildering dangers from the multiverse as the fate of the world hangs in the balance.
Firestarter
In a new adaptation of Stephen King’s classic thriller from the producers of The Invisible Man, a girl with pyrokinetic powers fights to protect her family and herself from sinister forces that seek to capture and control her. For more than a decade, parents Andy (Zac Efron) and Vicky (Sydney Lemmon) have been on the run, desperate to hide their daughter Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) from a shadowy federal agency that wants to harness her unprecedented gift for creating fire into a weapon of mass destruction.
The Castle
On their wedding day, Michael and Catherine break down in the middle of nowhere. After walking for several kilometres, they discover an old castle. Against her better judgement, Catherine is convinced by Michael to spend the night. Once she enters the castle, she feels like something is watching her. What she discovers in the castle will change her life forever.
Indemnity
A traumatized ex-firefighter in Cape Town wakes up next to his wife’s murdered corpse, with no recollection of what transpired. Labelled as the prime suspect, he goes on the run and is soon hunted by a notorious police chief, and an unknown third party. He must now fight for his life and find out who killed his wife, before a conspiracy changes the course of a nation forever.
