Three new movies arrive in South African cinemas this Friday. Unusually, the majority are targeting a female audience, although Mother’s Day this Sunday may have something to do with that – providing options for a celebratory outing with the women in your life.

As a sidenote, Ster Kinekor’s R50 Throwback Thursdays continue in May, and they’re a special treat for Batman fans. Along with Joker, all three of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight movies will be returning to select cinemas for one day only.

Book Club: The Next Chapter

Surprise 2018 comedy hit Book Club gets a sequel with The Next Chapter, which sees stars Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen return for more senior lady shenanigans. The four best friends head to Italy for the fun girls’ trip they never had, only to see their planned relaxing vacation turn into an off-the-rails adventure.

Hypnotic

Action thriller Hypnotic pairs stylish filmmaker Robert Rodriguez with star Ben Affleck for this twisty tale of a police detective whose finds that his search for his missing daughter overlaps with a series of reality-bending bank robberies. He’s assisted by psychic Diana Cruz (Alice Braga). Also starring Jeff Fahey, Jackie Earle Haley and William Fichtner.

Love Again

Romantic comedy drama Love Again stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Mira Ray, a woman struggling to move on two years after the death of her fiance. She continues to send texts to his old cellphone number, not realizing it’s been reassigned to journalist Rob Burns (Sam Heughan). Captivated by the messages, Rob enlists the help of singer Celine Dion – who he is interviewing for a story – to win Mira’s heart.
