There’s just one new release charging into cinemas this week, but this survival thriller looks to offer 93 minutes of heart-pounding, chair-clawing action. Bonus points for it being filmed entirely in South Africa, on location in Cape Town, Limpopo and the Northern Cape.

Beast

In Beast, Idris Elba plays Dr. Nate Daniels, a recently widowed husband who returns to South Africa, where he first met his wife, on a long-planned trip with their teenage daughters. Their destination is a game reserve managed by Martin Battles (Sharlto Copley), an old family friend and wildlife biologist. But what begins as a journey of healing becomes a fearsome fight for survival when a rogue lion – whose encounters with poachers mean it now sees all humans as the enemy – begins stalking them. Beast is directed by Baltasar (Everest) Kormákur.
