While Disney+ didn’t have a big interactive consumer experience at Comic Con Cape Town this past weekend, they didn’t skimp on exciting announcements and reveals. Like using CCCT partner event, the Cape Town International Animation Festival, to unveil the first teaser trailer for upcoming animated anthology series Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire, which comes from animators across the African continent, and features an energetic sci-fi focus.
Announced back in 2021, Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire is an entirely African made project that draws on the continent’s diverse histories and cultures to present visions of humanity’s future in an Afrofuturist vein. The series will consist of ten original shorts combining action and uniquely African perspectives of advanced technology, aliens, spirits, and monsters.
Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire is a truly continental affair, with creative contributions from Nigeria (Shofela Coker), Egypt (Ahmed Teilab), Kenya (Ng’endo Mukii), Uganda (Raymond Malinga), Zimbabwe (Pious Nyenyewa and Tafadzwa Hove) and a handful of South African teams (Simangaliso ‘Panda’ Sibaya and Malcolm Wope, Terence Maluleke and Isaac Mogajane, Nthato Mokgata and Catherine Green, Tshepo Moche, and Lesego Vorster). A further bump of pride for South Africa is that the country’s pioneering animation house Triggerfish is the lead studio for the anthology, working in collaboration with animators globally.
As for vocal talent involved in Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire, the series features the likes of Black Panther’s Florence Kasumba, Queen Sono’s Pearl Thusi, Hotel Rwanda and Godzilla vs. Kong’s Hakeem Kae-Kazim, comedians Tumi Morake, Sne Dladla and Tyson Ngubeni, plus rappers Nasty C and Gigi Lamayne.
Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire will debut in 2023 (reportedly around mid-year), exclusively on Disney+.
