With the Oscar nominations announced this week, movies are top of mind for a lot of people. Moving on to comics, well, they have a considerable amount of overlap with films as a visual storytelling medium, and many filmmakers have created for both the screen and page. Sometimes even actors have made the creative leap, like Jamie Lee Curtis with the release of Mother Nature, an environmental horror tale, last year, and Keanu Reeves with his co-written action hit BRZRKR for BOOM! Studios.
All this said, I can’t ever recall seeing a comic based on the life of a real-life filmmaker. Until now. Releasing on 13 February is Quentin By Tarantino, by Eisner Award-nominated comic creator Amazing Améziane, and published for the first time in English by Titan Comics.
While it’s not officially made in collaboration with the much-admired writer, director and producer, the 240-page graphic novel is nonetheless a first-person account. Using anecdotes from Tarantino as its base, Quentin By Tarantino takes the form of an imagined exclusive interview, with the on-page auteur walking readers through his 30+ year career, from working in a video shop to working with some of the world’s biggest movie stars on the likes of Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, Inglourious Basterds, and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (we could go on an on!).
Quentin By Tarantino will also dive into Tarantino’s influences as a filmmaker, and opinions on movie-making in general, making it a treat for his fans, and cinephiles in general. Adding to the package, writer and artist Améziane has adopted a creative style that mirrors the energy, wit and unfiltered razor-sharpness that defines Tarantino’s work.
Out of interest, Améziane is working on similar graphic novels based on the careers of Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. Releasing next (in English) in the French comic creator’s Cine Trilogy series is Don Coppola, on 11 June 2024.
Originally planned for release in October 2023, Quentin By Tarantino will be available from 13 February in softcover format, priced at $24.99. You can find all your physical and digital purchase options here.
