We don’t often punt Kickstarters here, but given the rate at which wlw (women loving women) entertainment is being cancelled these days – looking at you, Netflix – we’re signal boosting a campaign related to one of our favourite LGBT+ comics of last year.
From Italian comic creators Iolanda Zanfardino and Elisa Romboli – who have also teamed up to give readers the likes of raunchy romcom Alice in Leatherland, and recent relatable fantasy The Least We Can Do – A Thing Called Truth Vol. 1 released in April 2022. It was published under Image Comics’ Shadowline imprint.
A Thing Called Truth’s character-driven adventure kicks off when workaholic German scientist Magdeline (Mag) Trälimer is booted by her Big Pharma bosses so they can exploit her world-changing discovery. After one very drunken night of drowning her sorrows, Mag finds herself on a road trip across Europe with Dorian Wildfang, an apparently carefree woman who has more lesbian swag than even Shane in The L Word.
With its odd couple heroines, Volume 1 of A Thing Called Truth delivers breezy, high-energy fun, paired with quieter, but just as expressive, moments of introspection. Both women are running from their problems, while dealing with further emotional complication as they find themselves drawn to one another… when they really shouldn’t.
While the first volume of A Thing Called Truth featured a satisfying ending, it also left many unanswered questions. Now Iolanda and Elisa have launched a Kickstarter campaign to revive the cancelled series, make Vol. 2 happen, and conclude Mag and Dorian’s romantic road trip. As Iolanda says, “We love this story so much we decided not to give up on it. There’s so much left to tell! We’re trying to prove that queer stories deserve good endings.”
There’s two weeks left to go to fund A Thing Called Truth Vol. 2: Drive Home – the campaign ends on 1 March – and it’s currently just over halfway to its $24,000 goal. Pledges start at 10€, although the first real reward tier is 15€, which gets you a digital copy of the 120-page sequel. Other pledge levels include receiving physical graphic novels of both Volume 1 and 2; being turned into a background character in a certain scene; and the usual signed editions and pages. There’s even a special retailer tier for comic stockists and “nerd den denizens” where 100€ gets your six copies of Volume 2 at a discount. So, take your pick.
A Thing Called Truth Vol. 2: Drive Home has an estimated September 2024 ship and fulfilment date.
